Because I Love You

The speaker is deeply attached to someone and fears that this person has found a new partner. The repeated declarations of love sound tender, but they also reveal desperation: the speaker would rather avoid painful knowledge than face the possibility of being left. The song moves from a request not to be told bad news to a stark admission of how much the speaker depends on the relationship.

The saying “what you don’t know won’t hurt you” suggests that ignorance can protect someone from emotional pain. The phrase “go through life with you” makes a new relationship sound lasting and serious, while wanting the beloved “nearest me” expresses a wish for closeness and exclusivity.

The line about preferring death to life without the beloved may be an intense romantic exaggeration rather than a literal plan, but it makes the speaker’s fear sound extreme. The lyrics leave unclear whether the beloved has actually found someone new or whether the speaker is imagining the possibility. They also do not say whether the love is returned; the hope that it is suggests that the speaker may be uncertain.
