Shadow On The Sun

The speaker looks back on a time when they could understand and support someone, but that closeness has ended. The mood shifts from remembered confidence to isolation and grief. The speaker now describes people dying alone and losing touch with their minds, suggesting a bleak sense that suffering can overwhelm understanding.

“Lay your burden down” means to help someone feel less weighed down by trouble. By contrast, “a hole” and living “without a soul” suggest emptiness after a deep loss. The central image, “a shadow on the sun,” joins darkness with a source of light: the speaker seems to feel present but unable to shine, or to see hope clearly. The doors “bolted from within” suggest a mind closed off from others, perhaps by fear or pain.

The song can be read as describing grief, depression, or a painful separation, but it does not explain exactly what happened. The changing memories and images may reflect a speaker struggling to make sense of loss rather than offering a clear account. The repeated claim that the end will never come could mean that suffering feels endless; it might also express a refusal to believe that anything can truly be resolved.
