Lyrics meaning

The speaker is still deeply attached to someone after their relationship has ended. At first, the lyrics describe time passing without bringing relief: the days feel painful, the nights long, and the speaker is โ€œstill holding on.โ€ The emotional conflict becomes clearer in the repeated refrain: the speaker would rather be hated or regretted than forgotten. They know the relationship caused hurt, but the thought of the other person moving on feels even more painful.

Several expressions convey this distress. โ€œDrag my name through the dirtโ€ means to criticize or damage someoneโ€™s reputation, while โ€œvitriolโ€ means bitter, hostile language. The contrast between โ€œhate to know I made you cryโ€ and โ€œlove to know I cross your mindโ€ shows the speakerโ€™s mixed feelings: they regret causing pain but find comfort in still being remembered. โ€œSome scars you canโ€™t eraseโ€ may refer to emotional wounds that remain after a breakup.

The lyrics can be heard as an honest confession of grief and insecurity, but also as a possessive wish: the speaker is โ€œnot ready to letโ€ the other person forget them. That may express the fear of becoming unimportant, rather than a literal plan to prevent the other person from moving on. The song leaves open whether the ex still feels the same; the speaker guesses that they do, but cannot know for sure.
