Days of the Ring

The lyrics describe someone being comforted at the end of a long journey. The speaker urges them to rest and promises they will be safe, while images of ships and a distant shore suggest a passage away from ordinary life. The mood moves from tenderness and grief toward calm acceptance, though sadness remains.

A “weary head” makes the traveler’s exhaustion feel both physical and emotional. “White shores” and ships carrying someone “home” may suggest death as a peaceful voyage, rather than a frightening end. The “silver glass” on the water evokes a quiet, luminous scene, while the pale moon and calling gulls make the crossing feel mysterious and dreamlike.

The lyrics leave room for more than one reading: the journey might be a literal voyage, a symbolic death, or a transition into a place beyond memory and time. The repeated claim that the person is “only sleeping” can be understood as gentle reassurance, but it does not remove the possibility of permanent separation. The promise that the two will meet again offers hope without making the farewell entirely certain.
