Lyrics meaning
The speaker invites Milord, a wealthy or socially important man, to sit with her and find warmth and comfort. She says she knows him, though he has never noticed her: she is a working-class woman from the port, almost invisible in the street. She remembers seeing him proudly walking with a beautiful woman. Now that the woman has left on a ship, Milord is heartbroken, and the speaker tries to comfort him, then coax him into smiling, singing, and dancing.
The contrast between the cold outdoors and the welcoming table suggests both physical shelter and emotional kindness. “Your sorrows on my heart” is a tender image: she offers to share his pain, while his feet can rest on a chair. The ship carries away the woman he loved, turning departure into a symbol of sudden loss. Calling her place “my kingdom” sounds playful and confident; even someone overlooked by Milord can briefly become the host and set the mood.
The speaker’s compassion seems genuine, but the song also leaves room for teasing and performance. She notices that Milord once seemed proud and fortunate, yet now he looks like a child in distress. Her encouragement to laugh and dance may help him recover, or it may simply lift the mood for the moment. The lyrics do not tell us whether his sadness will pass or whether the speaker wants anything from him; they focus on an unexpected act of care between two people from very different social worlds.
