The Ballad of Jed Clampett

The lyrics tell a comic story of sudden change. Jed begins poor, struggling to feed his family, but discovers oil and becomes rich almost overnight. His relatives encourage him to move to Beverly Hills, where wealth and a new setting promise a very different life. The ending shifts from the story to a friendly farewell, inviting listeners to return.

The oil is described as “black gold,” a metaphor that makes the discovery sound like a valuable treasure. “Texas tea” is another playful name for oil, treating it as if it were a drink. “Loaded up the truck” means they packed their belongings and left, while “swimmin pools, movie stars” suggests the glamorous life associated with Beverly Hills.

The lyrics use humor and a warm, informal voice. Jed’s sudden fortune is presented as a simple, lucky turn rather than the result of ambition or hard work. The contrast between his poor mountain life and the rich new neighborhood may gently poke fun at how quickly money can change someone’s circumstances. Still, the song does not say whether Jed feels at home in his new surroundings; the story celebrates the move without exploring that question.
