Teen Angel

The song tells of a young person grieving after their sweetheart dies in a car accident. The narrator first remembers pulling the other person to safety when their car stalled on a railroad track, but they ran back and were killed. The feelings move from shock and confusion to mourning, then to a desperate wish for an answer.

The “railroad track” is the immediate danger, while the sweetheart’s return to the car remains unexplained: the narrator wonders what they were looking for. The high school ring, found tightly held in the dead person’s fingers, suggests a strong attachment to the narrator and their relationship. Calling the beloved a “teen angel” may express love and grief, and may also suggest the narrator imagines them somewhere in heaven.
