Mortals

The lyrics describe someone feeling isolated, emotionally exhausted, and close to giving up. At first, the speaker seems trapped in sorrow and numbness, facing an uncertain or frightening ending. The mood then shifts toward hope: they look ahead to a new beginning and follow something that may lead them to freedom.

“Stranded in the open” suggests being exposed and alone, without shelter or support. “Staring down the barrel” is a tense image that can imply facing danger or death, though the lyrics do not explain the situation directly. In contrast, “the light” commonly represents hope, guidance, or a way out of hardship. The “final gates” may suggest a boundary between the speaker’s present suffering and whatever comes next.

The ending sounds hopeful, but its meaning remains open. “A new tomorrow” could mean recovering and starting life again, while “final gates” and the earlier image of a barrel may point to a more final escape. The repeated claim of being set free emphasizes release, but the lyrics do not say whether that freedom comes through survival, change, or an ending.
