Lyrics meaning

The lyrics describe the end of a powerful kingdom and the return of soldiers after their king has died. The mood moves from a bleak winter journey to grief and a sense of national collapse. The repeated announcement that the kingdom’s great-power era is over makes the loss feel final, while the soldiers’ return suggests the human cost behind that political change.

Several images make the defeat vivid. “The kingdom bleeds” treats the country like a wounded person, implying suffering and damage. “The flag is on fire” suggests that the nation’s power or identity is being destroyed. The soldiers walk with “lowered heads” through biting cold: this may describe the harsh weather, but it also conveys exhaustion and sorrow. “Never return” can mean both that the old greatness will not come back and that the dead will not come home.

The lyrics also connect war to ambition, strict religion, and service to the country, but they do not present these motives as simple or wholly noble. The chorus mourns the soldiers as people who were “taken for granted” and killed, then asks who let it happen. That question could express anger at those responsible, or the helplessness of people facing a loss too large to explain.
