There's a trade you all know well, it's bringing the cattle over
Listen to me and I'll tell to you how I became a drover
I wanted stock for Queensland, to Kempsey I did wander
Bought a thousand cattle there and then turned overlander
ย
When the cattle were counted and the outfit ready to start
I saw the boys all gathered with their swags in a cart
All kinds of men I had, from France and Spain and Flanders
Lawyers, doctors good and bad, a bunch of overlanders
Pass the bottle 'round, boys, and don't you leave it standing
For tonight we'll drink the health of every overlander
ย
We moved the cattle fifty miles and made camp for the day
We'd talk about the rich folks' life and true love far away
Our tucker isn't fancy, it's beef and tea and amber
But wash it down with Queensland rum, it suits the overlander
ย
In town we dress ourselves up and we go and see a play
We never think of being hard up or how to spend a day
We steer up to the pretty girls that dress themselves in grand
And while they spend our cheques they swear they love the overlander
Pass the bottle 'round, boys, and don't you leave it standing
For tonight we'll drink the health of every overlander
ย
I would never steal a shirt, but all me mates can say
That if we pass a town shiv upon a washing day
The dirty brats, the kids will shout and quickly raise me dander
Crying, "Mother dear, take in your clothes, here comes the overlander"
Pass the bottle 'round, boys, and don't you leave it standing
For tonight we'll drink the health of every overlander
Pass the bottle 'round, boys, and don't you leave it standing
For tonight we'll drink the health of every overlander
