Son of a Gun

The speaker presents himself as a confident truck driver who enjoys having romantic partners in many towns. He is traveling quickly and looks forward to reaching more places, while the playful refrain gives the song a boastful, comic tone. Near the end, he mentions a steady partner waiting at home, creating a contrast between his home life and his casual relationships on the road.

The “big wheel” is the truck, addressed as if it were a companion that can speed up or slow down. “Flying low” suggests another driver is moving fast, while “making up his time” means trying to recover time lost on the journey. The phrase “son of a gun” is a mild, often humorous expression; here it helps make the speaker sound like a lively rogue. His claim to remember a woman’s figure but not her name is another joke about his careless attitude.

The lyrics can be heard as lighthearted exaggeration, not necessarily a serious account of the speaker’s life. His bragging may make him seem charmingly mischievous, but it can also suggest that he treats the women he meets as interchangeable. The mention of a partner back home leaves some uncertainty about whether he sees his behavior as harmless fun or simply ignores its consequences.
