Lyrics

Well, as a blues woman, I've gotten the opportunity to travel all Around the world, and I'm grateful for that. Europe, France, China Indian, east and west, north and south, some big cities. But always Hidden behind the curtain, there are some neighborhoods where poverty And unemployment and violence, they rule. Neighborhoods where it's Not safe for a child to be raised. Here we call these places the Ghettos. You can travel all around the world, the story's the same As the snow flies On a cold and gray Chicago morn Another little hungry mouth is born In the ghetto And his mama cries 'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need It's another little hungry mouth to feed In the ghetto People, don't you understand? A child needs a helping hand Or he's gonna grow up to be an angry young man someday Take a look at me Are we too blind to see? Do we simply turn our heads And look the other way? Well, the world turns A hungry little boy with a runny nose Plays in the street as the cold wind blows In the ghetto And his hunger burns So he starts to roam the streets at night Learns how to steal and he learns how to fight In the ghetto And then one night in desperation A young man breaks away He buys a gun, he steals a car Tries to run, but he doesn't get far And his mama cries And a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man Face down in the street, he got a gun in his hand In the ghetto And her young man dies On a cold and gray Chicago morn Another little baby child is born In the ghetto And then one night in desperation A young man breaks away He buys a gun, he steals a car Tries to run, but he don't get far And his mama cries A crowd gathers 'round an angry young man He face down in the street, he got a gun in his hand In the ghetto Please save the children, oh, in the ghetto Save the children, save the children, in the ghetto All over the world, they got pain, pain Tell me where we gonna run? The ghetto is getting out of hand Ooh, it grieves my soul It grieves, it grieves, it grieves Nobody seems to care Everybody's turning their own back Going their own way The children are our future In the ghetto, the children Help the poor, help the poor, help the poor In the ghetto
