Imperfect Tenses

The lyrics follow a movement from accusation and hurt toward a more complicated kind of courage. At first, the speaker feels marked by past pain and blames others, while waiting for a sign that will uncover what is inside. As the voices begin to challenge each other, the focus shifts: instead of asking only who is at fault, they ask what it means to be open, honest, and strong.

Several images express this change. A “permanent mark” suggests that an experience has left lasting emotional damage, though the speaker also calls it a source of strength. The “perfect sign” seems to represent a hoped-for moment of certainty or self-revelation. The idea of being strong by being “susceptible” turns ordinary expectations upside down: here, vulnerability may take more courage than hiding feelings.

The changing “I” and “you” make the exchange ambiguous. It may be a conversation between two people, or between conflicting parts of one person. The lyrics do not settle whether forgiveness is possible: one voice rejects it, while another urges the speaker to stop condemning the past. The ending sounds like a declaration of self-expression, but it does not promise that pain or fear has disappeared.
