Lyrics meaning
The speaker describes intense loneliness and repeatedly says he wants to die. The feeling seems constant, lasting from morning to evening, and the repeated lines make his distress sound trapped and difficult to escape. He also addresses a girl as if she already knows the reason for his despair, but the lyrics never explain what that reason is.
Several images make the sadness vivid. The eagle picking at his eyes and the worm licking his bones evoke a body being consumed, perhaps suggesting death or a sense of being destroyed from within. A โblack cloudโ crossing his mind and โblue mistโ around his soul turn emotional pain into dark, heavy weather. The contrast between parents โof the skyโ and โof the earth,โ while the speaker is โof the universe,โ suggests a search for where he belongs, but it does not bring him comfort.
The songโs language is deliberately blunt and extreme, so the wish to die may be heard as an expression of overwhelming despair rather than a literal plan; the lyrics alone cannot settle that question. The reference to โMr. Jonesโ may point toward another song or character, but its exact significance is unclear here. The speakerโs claim to belong to the universe could suggest vastness or connection, yet it sits beside loneliness, making that sense of belonging feel painfully distant.
