Each and Every One

The speaker addresses someone who offers affection and support, but only on restrictive terms. At first, the speaker sounds guarded and independent, warning that comforting words may not be trustworthy. As the lyrics continue, frustration and hurt become clearer: the speaker recognizes a repeated pattern and doubts that anything has truly changed.

Several images make this pattern vivid. “Show me heaven and then slam the door” suggests offering hope or closeness, then suddenly withdrawing it. “Shelter at a price much too dear” presents care as something that demands too much in return. The phrase “under your thumb” means being controlled, while “the same thing in a different guise” means an old problem disguised as something new.

The title’s “each and every one” may widen the complaint beyond a single relationship: the speaker feels they keep encountering the same kind of treatment from different people.
