AshesToAshes

The lyrics create a mood of confusion and decline. A message from Major Tom, once associated with an earlier song, now presents him as struggling with addiction and feeling isolated. The speaker also seems worn down and uncertain, moving between attempts to stay clean, strange images, and the desire to “come down.” The repeated chorus makes the situation feel trapped in a cycle rather than resolved.

“Strung out in heaven’s high / Hitting an all-time low” contrasts a feeling of being elevated with deep distress. “Ashes to ashes” suggests things breaking down or returning to nothing, while “funk to funky” gives the refrain a playful sound that clashes with its bleak meaning. The “little green wheels” following the speaker may suggest hallucinations or an anxious, recurring thought, but the image is deliberately unclear. “Break the ice” is an idiom meaning to ease tension or begin contact; here, wanting an axe gives it a more forceful, unsettling edge.

The song may be read as a reflection on addiction, regret, and the difficulty of escaping a familiar story. Major Tom’s status as a remembered figure blurs the line between a real person and a symbol of someone in trouble. The speaker’s claims of having done neither good nor bad may express numbness, uncertainty, or a refusal to explain himself. The lyrics leave these possibilities open rather than offering a clear account or solution.
