Lyrics meaning

The song tells a grim story from the killerโ€™s point of view. He recalls shooting Delia, whom he says he once hoped to marry, and then repeats that she is gone. The refrain sounds almost like a drinking song, but its steady rhythm contrasts with the violence. As the song progresses, his boastful justification gives way to unease: in jail, he cannot sleep and imagines hearing Deliaโ€™s footsteps.

The narrator calls Delia โ€œlow-down and triflinโ€™,โ€ meaning he sees her as unreliable or worthless, and โ€œcold and mean,โ€ presenting her as cruel. These are his accusations, not proven facts. โ€œOne more roundโ€ may suggest another drink, giving the refrain a drunken, repetitive quality. The โ€œpatter of Deliaโ€™s feetโ€ is an unsettling image: he may be imagining her presence, perhaps from guilt or fear.

The song leaves room to question how much we should trust the narrator. He describes Delia as a reason for his anger, but his own account shows that he tied her to a chair and shot her twice. The closing warning seems to excuse violence against a difficult partner, making the speaker sound threatening as well as disturbed. His sleeplessness might suggest remorse, fear of punishment, or simply a haunting memory; the lyrics do not settle which.
