Lyrics meaning

The speaker contrasts his life with Susieโ€™s apparent wealth and social status. He sounds wounded and lonely, but he also uses a dry, defiant humor: her imagined contempt will not stop him from making a sharp reply. The repeated chorus turns the contrast into a bitter exchange, ending with a promise that sounds both comic and threatening.

โ€œDead flowersโ€ are an image of a gift that looks affectionate but carries no real warmth; they may suggest a relationship marked by resentment rather than love. The โ€œsilk upholstered chairโ€ and โ€œrose pink Cadillacโ€ suggest comfort and privilege, while the speakerโ€™s โ€œbasement roomโ€ suggests isolation and hardship. His reference to a โ€œneedle and a spoonโ€ implies drug use, and โ€œtake my pain awayโ€ hints that he is trying to escape emotional as well as physical suffering.

The song leaves the relationship unclear. Susie may be a real former partner, or she may represent a world that looks down on the speaker. The wedding and grave connect love with death, but the speakerโ€™s promise to place roses on her grave could be a dark joke, a sign of lingering attachment, or both. The sarcasm makes it difficult to know how much of his bravado hides genuine pain.
