Lyrics meaning

The song follows a father and son through changing stages of life. When the boy is young, he wants his fatherโ€™s attention, but the father keeps postponing time together because of work and other duties. The boy grows up, becomes busy himself, and eventually gives his father the same kind of delay. The mood shifts from the fatherโ€™s confidence that they will meet later to regret as he recognizes the pattern.

The repeated promise to โ€œget together thenโ€ means the meeting is always put off to an uncertain future. The childhood rhyme images in โ€œthe catโ€™s in the cradle and the silver spoonโ€ give the refrain a nursery-like sound, contrasting with the adult story. The sonโ€™s wish to be โ€œlikeโ€ his father first sounds affectionate, but later becomes painful: he has also learned to be too busy for their relationship.

The lyrics suggest that love may be present even when people fail to make time for one another. The fatherโ€™s regret is clear, but the song does not say whether the son will eventually visit or whether their relationship can change. Its ending leaves the listener with both recognition and uncertainty: the pattern has been repeated, but it may not be impossible to break.
