Lyrics meaning

The lyrics tell a comic, almost Western-style story about Rocky, who is hurt when his partner leaves him for another man. His heartbreak turns into a plan for revenge, but the planned showdown ends with Rocky getting shot instead. The mood shifts from playful bravado to physical vulnerability, then ends on an oddly hopeful note as Rocky is left with a Bible and the idea of recovery.

Several details make the story feel both dramatic and absurd. Rocky books a room in a saloon, a familiar setting for a Western confrontation, and brings a gun to face his rival. The line about the rival having โ€œbroken his dreamsโ€ means he has destroyed Rockyโ€™s hopes, not literally damaged anything. The โ€œGideonโ€™s Bibleโ€ appears twice, unexpectedly: Rocky finds it in his room before and after the shooting. Its presence may suggest comfort, spiritual help, or simply a comic contrast with his violent intentions.

The song does not present Rocky as a simple hero. He acts from hurt and anger, but his boastful plan fails, and the doctorโ€™s drunkenness makes the aftermath ridiculous as well as serious. The endingโ€™s talk of โ€œrevivalโ€ could mean Rockyโ€™s physical recovery, a spiritual renewal, or a playful blend of both. The final sung refrain is also ambiguous: it seems to shift away from the story rather than neatly explain what happens next.
