Child In Time

The lyrics warn a “sweet child” that life contains a divide between good and bad, but they quickly place that moral idea in a frightening world of violence. A person is firing blindly, and bullets are hurting people without seeming to distinguish between the guilty and innocent. The repeated words and cries build tension, making the song feel less like a calm lesson and more like an alarm.

The “line” between good and bad suggests a moral boundary, though the lyrics do not explain exactly where it lies. The “blind man” shooting at the world may represent violence without understanding or control. “Wait for the ricochet” means waiting for a bullet to rebound; figuratively, it can suggest that violence may return unpredictably and harm someone nearby. “Close your eyes” and “bow your head” sound like instructions to seek safety, but they also imply helplessness.

The song’s warning is deliberately unsettling rather than neatly resolved. It hints that wrongdoing has consequences, yet the flying bullets make danger seem random, so being “good” may not protect anyone. The speaker’s repeated “Oh, no” could express fear, protest, or a refusal to take part; the lyrics do not settle on one meaning. The long vocal passages intensify these feelings without adding a clear narrative.
