Lyrics meaning
The lyrics present a loud, crowded city through the voice of a self-styled “city ape.” At first, the speaker enjoys being admired: he sings, poses, parties, and boasts about his appeal and success. The mood is energetic and comic, but it becomes more uneasy as the city’s dirt, noise, conflict, and pollution come into view. The celebration continues, yet the repeated idea that people are “deaf and blind” suggests that the fun may also involve ignoring what is wrong.
The ape is an important metaphor. By describing himself and the crowd as primates, the speaker makes their behavior seem instinctive, physical, and unruly; his exaggerated swagger may be a joke rather than a sincere claim of greatness. Images of flashing lights, smog-filled lungs, and a city that “stinks” contrast excitement with unpleasant reality. The phrase “taub und blind” means “deaf and blind,” and here implies being so caught up in partying that people fail to notice their surroundings.
The song can be heard as both a celebration of wild city life and a satire of it. The speaker seems to love the city’s energy, but also admits he cannot live comfortably with its “dirt”—or without it. That contradiction leaves his attitude open: he may be mocking urban excess, expressing affection for a chaotic home, or doing both at once.
