Lyrics meaning

The lyrics imagine Europe being destroyed by war and nuclear weapons, then repeat a darkly comic invitation: visit before it is gone. The mood moves between alarming images and a catchy, almost cheerful refrain. That contrast makes the warning feel both humorous and unsettling, as if people are being encouraged to enjoy a place while ignoring how close disaster may be.

Several images turn familiar landmarks into signs of danger: submarines in Venice’s Grand Canal, missile launchers near the Vatican, and the Eiffel Tower bending as if to say goodbye. The “mushroom cloud” over Cologne is a common image of a nuclear explosion. The line about a “bomb carpet” suggests bombs covering a wide area. Later, fine cooking becomes a “witch’s cauldron,” making Europe’s celebrated food culture seem absurdly small beside destruction.

The final verse shifts from military threats to a bizarre meal scene, where violence and good manners mix: people applaud, even as the waiter is kicked. This may suggest that entertainment and culture continue in a world gone wrong, or that people laugh to avoid facing danger. The repeated phrase “as long as it still stands” can sound like practical travel advice, but its urgency also makes it a grim warning.
