Lyrics meaning
The lyrics present African identity as something that connects Black people regardless of where they live or were born. The repeated refrain gives the song a steady, persuasive feeling: differences of nationality, religion, and appearance are named, then treated as less important than shared identity. The long list of places broadens this message from Caribbean communities to people around the world.
The places function as examples of how widely this identity can extend; being from an island, a city, or a country elsewhere does not change the refrainโs answer. โNo mindโ means roughly โpay no attention toโ or โdo not let it matter.โ The references to complexion โhigh,โ โlow,โ or โin betweenโ suggest that skin-tone differences should not divide people. Calling religious denominations โonly segregationโ frames them as boundaries that can separate people.
The lyrics make a clear, inclusive claim, but its meaning is not purely geographic: โAfricanโ is presented as a shared identity rooted in Blackness, even for people whose homes are far from Africa. This can be heard as an assertion of belonging and solidarity. At the same time, the song does not explain how every listener might understand that identity, so the refrain may feel like a powerful invitation rather than a precise definition.
