Horn

The speaker feels hurt and betrayed by someone who has spread their name around town and mistreated them. Yet the song ends not with a breakup or confrontation, but with a familiar plan to pick the person up. This creates an emotional shift from complaint and sadness toward a continuing, almost routine connection.

The “nasty flyers” suggest public humiliation, while possessions scattered “in a ring around the earth” is an exaggerated image of being thoroughly disrupted or stripped of what matters. The speaker says their “self control” was bought and sold, implying that they feel their composure or independence has been used up cheaply. The car horn, by contrast, is a simple signal: the speaker will arrive as usual.

That contrast leaves the relationship ambiguous. The speaker may be forgiving, unable to leave, or simply following a habit despite being wounded. “As usual” makes the pickup sound ordinary, but after the accusations it also feels emotionally complicated. The brief repeated phrases, “Rhine wine” and “Car horn,” may work more as playful sounds and fragments than as clues to a clear story; the lyrics do not explain their exact meaning.
