m.A.A.d city

The lyrics portray a speaker remembering life in a city shaped by gang conflict, weapons, drugs, and sudden violence. The mood moves between fear, anger, and hard-edged bravado, then becomes more reflective as he considers how his surroundings influenced him. He also imagines a different future for children, where they might choose professional careers instead of carrying guns.

The repeated question “where you from?” suggests that people are judged by their neighborhood and connections, not simply by who they are. The image of the city “going against” the speaker conveys a feeling of being surrounded by danger and suspicion. “Living inside the belly” of a rough place is a metaphor for being deeply immersed in its harsh conditions, while “skeletons” means painful or shameful secrets from the past.

The lyrics mix personal memory with exaggerated, forceful language, so not every statement should be read as a literal report. The speaker both condemns the violence and describes feeling drawn into its rules; this tension makes the account complicated rather than simply celebratory or condemning. His hope for a safer future is clear, but the final scene, with friends talking casually after drinking, leaves the danger and uncertainty present.
