Lyrics meaning

The speaker looks back on a former self who seemed full of passion and belief, especially in love and dramatic feelings. Now he says those emotions were never quite realโ€”or no longer feel accessible. The repeated refrain suggests a change that cannot easily be reversed: he has stopped at a place where he once found inspiration, and no longer does.

The train is a metaphor for the speakerโ€™s creative and emotional life. Once the โ€œmain express,โ€ he seemed energetic and gathered painful experiences as material for songs; now the train no longer stops there. โ€œPurple proseโ€ means richly decorative writing, while โ€œblack and whiteโ€ suggests a plainer, less sentimental view of reality. His claim that he does not care is also undercut by the image of an engine โ€œbreaking downโ€: indifference may be a way of describing exhaustion or distress.

The lyrics leave open whether the speaker is confessing that his earlier romantic songs were never sincere, or expressing how numb and disillusioned he feels in the present. His denial of emotion is not entirely convincing, since he describes his heart being chipped and himself crumbling. The tension between emotional detachment and visible pain gives the song a more vulnerable meaning than a simple rejection of love.
