Come Pick Me Up

The speaker seems to be addressing someone they still desire, even though that person may hurt or betray them. The repeated wish that the person would return gives the song a conflicted emotional movement: longing is mixed with anger, humiliation, and a sense of helplessness. By the end, the speaker’s wish shifts from wanting the other person to act to wishing they themselves could find peace or make a decision.

Several images suggest how this relationship lingers in ordinary life. An “old love letter” represents a past attachment the speaker may be afraid to face. The mannequin eyes in shop windows seem to remind the speaker of the absent person, suggesting that memories can be projected onto strangers and objects. “Make up my bed” and “make up my mind” play on two meanings of “make up”: preparing a bed and reaching a decision. The speaker imagines rest, but cannot quite achieve it.

The repeated request to be taken out and “fucked up” sounds deliberately self-destructive, but it may also express a desire to feel something intense rather than remain lonely or numb. The speaker even imagines betrayal happening with a smile, which makes the wish especially troubling. It is unclear whether this is literal invitation, bitter fantasy, or sarcastic exaggeration; the lyrics leave that tension unresolved.
