Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)

The lyrics describe life as a cycle of changing seasons, with different moments suited to different experiences. Birth and death, laughter and grief, love and conflict all appear as parts of human life. The repeated refrain gives the song a steady, reflective feeling: change is constant, and no single phase lasts forever. By the end, the mention of peace adds a note of hope and urgency.

The list of paired opposites is the song’s main image. Planting and reaping suggest that life includes both beginning work and receiving its results. Building up and breaking down, or sewing and tearing, make change feel practical as well as emotional: things are made, undone, and made again. “A time to cast away stones” and “a time to gather stones together” can suggest that the same objects or actions may serve different purposes at different moments.

The lyrics may be heard as accepting that both joy and sorrow belong in life, rather than saying that every event is good or fair. The phrase “a time to every purpose under heaven” suggests an order or pattern, but the song does not explain who sets it or whether people can control it. Its final hope that peace is still possible keeps the message from being simple resignation: circumstances change, yet choosing peace may still matter.
