The paper comes without warning.
A signed document, a few words.
The school is shutting down.
"Budget cuts," they say.
"There's nothing we can do"
The kids don't protest,
they don't ask questions.
They just leave, one by one.
Dust rises from their shoes.
The classrooms are empty, silent.
Miguel stays behind, looking at the empty chairs,
the worn-out desks. Nothing will ever be the same.
The windows are still open, the wind keeps blowing in,
like always.
The future for those kids goes back to the streets.
No one will ask questions, no one will care.
And yet, there was something in that school.
It wasn't much, but it was something.
Now it's gone.
