My Wife

The speaker tells the story of a man who believes his wife is chasing him because she suspects him of being unfaithful. Even then, he plans to rest only so he can keep running.

Several expressions make the situation vivid. “Look after number one” means to protect or put yourself first. The speaker’s plans to buy a tank, an aeroplane, and a bodyguard suggest absurd overreaction rather than a realistic escape plan. “Picked the wrong precinct” implies that, after drinking too much, he ended up in the wrong police district and was arrested, adding a practical reason he has been away from home.

The lyrics leave room for uncertainty about how serious the danger is. The wife’s anger may be real, but the speaker’s dramatic claims and increasingly ridiculous plans make him seem unreliable, or simply comically frightened. His explanation—that he drank too much and was picked up by the police—does not fully address her suspicion. The repeated cries that she is coming keep the ending tense, while also making the pursuit feel like a joke that never quite resolves.
