Lyrics meaning

The lyrics feel deliberately strange rather than telling a clear story. A repeated chantโ€”โ€œI am the walrusโ€โ€”sits alongside images of crying, watching people, and waiting. The mood shifts between playful nonsense and something unsettling or mocking, as if the speaker is inviting us into a dream while also making fun of the people and rules around him.

Several images resist a single explanation. โ€œWe are all togetherโ€ suggests that identities may blur, while the egg-men and walrus sound like absurd characters in a fantasy. People running โ€œlike pigs from a gunโ€ creates a comic but threatening picture of panic. Waiting for the sun in an English garden, then getting a tan from standing in the rain, is an ironic joke: the expected pleasant outcome is replaced by something gloomy and uncomfortable.

A learner should not assume every phrase has a hidden, exact meaning. Some lines may work mainly through sound, surprise, or deliberately ridiculous pictures; others can be heard as satire of authority, social judgment, or people who act superior. The closing Shakespearean dialogue adds a sudden dramatic change of voice, but it does not resolve the song into a straightforward plot. The lyrics leave room for both nonsense and interpretation.
