Lyrics meaning

The speaker insists that he is being blamed for something he did not do. He says he was absent when the event happened, denies the charges, and repeatedly asks to be understood. As the song develops, the complaint becomes darker: he expects punishment or death, yet still imagines a life in which he might become Prime Minister. That mix of fear, defiance, and unlikely ambition gives the lyrics a bitterly comic tone.

โ€œOff with his headโ€ evokes a harsh, dramatic punishment, while โ€œstrange fruitโ€ suggests a disturbing sight or consequence; both make the speakerโ€™s situation feel threatening without explaining exactly what has happened. โ€œI plead not guiltyโ€ uses the formal language of a courtroom. His claim to be โ€œPrime Ministerial material,โ€ followed by the thought of that possibility from his cell, contrasts public ambition with confinement and may be ironic.

The repeated claim that they have โ€œthe wrong manโ€ could be taken literally: perhaps the speaker is innocent and trapped in a mistaken accusation. But the lyrics do not reveal what the charges are, and his evasive-sounding explanations may leave room for doubt. The songโ€™s humor does not remove the sense of danger; instead, it makes the speakerโ€™s protest sound both absurd and desperate.
