Lyrics
The wind rolls in from the northern pass
With a howl too long for a wolf to last
The lanterns shake the shutters cry
But still they say it's just the sky
The gate stands tall but it bows at night
What the frost turns black and the moon turns white
I've seen the tracks in the blood wet snow
They vanish fast, but not too slow
They call me mad, they drink, they jest
But I've seen breath on the chapel's chest
There's a wolf at winter's gate
With eyes like fire and a hunger great
It doesn't howl, it hums, it waits
And it's counting names behind the gates
You don't hear paws, you feel the weight
Of the wolf at winter's gate
And it's not the cold that takes your breath
It's the thing beneath it, promising death
They say the woods are just trees and frost
But I found bones where the path was lost
Laid out neat like someone prayed
But no one here would dig that grave
The dogs won't bark
The bells won't ring
The snow falls quiet, like it's listening
And in the hush I swear I heard
A voice too low to shape as words
The lord's men ride, but they don't return
And the sky glows red when the windpipes burn
There's a wolf at winter's gate
With breath like ash, and bones for bait
It's not a beast, it's curse, it's fate
And it's pulling down the log and weight
Don't wait for dawn, don't tempt it late
There's a wolf at winter's gate
Rumour's not the wind that takes your breath
It's the thing beneath it promising death
They'll laugh until the gate gives in
Until the claws reach crown and king
And I'll be gone before they know
Who kept the fire, who watched the snow
There's a wolf at winter's gate
And by the time they see it's far too late
The snow will fall and the blood will steam
And they'll die still thinking it was a dream
But I will run I won't look straight
Let the wolf have winter's gate
Rumour's not the cold that takes your breath
