Mustang Sally

The singer addresses Sally, who seems to spend her time driving around rather than staying with him. He sounds frustrated and warns that she should slow down, but the repeated, lively refrain makes the complaint feel playful as well as serious. By the end, he predicts that she will regret her behavior and be left in tears.

The Mustang is both a real car—the singer says he bought her a new one—and a symbol of freedom, movement, and independence. “Running all over the town” suggests that Sally is constantly out, while “put your flat feet on the ground” means he wants her to stop and settle down. The repeated phrase “ride around” gives the song its catchy rhythm and emphasizes how much driving matters to the conflict.

The relationship is not fully explained, so the singer’s motives remain open to interpretation. He may feel neglected because Sally prefers her car and freedom to spending time with him; his warning could be an attempt to regain her attention or control. The energetic delivery keeps the mood from sounding purely angry, leaving room for teasing, jealousy, and genuine hurt at once.
