The speaker longs deeply for someone who is far away or absent. Time feels slow, and the speaker wonders whether the relationship still exists. The repeated pleas for love suggest growing urgency, but the lyrics also hold on to hope: the speaker wants the beloved’s love to reach them and imagines a return home.

The phrase “hungered for your touch” compares physical longing to hunger, making the need feel powerful and almost painful. “Godspeed your love to me” is a wish for the beloved’s love to come safely and quickly. The rivers that “flow to the sea” suggest a journey toward reunion; when they seem to cry “wait for me,” nature is given a human voice.

The song leaves important questions unanswered. We do not know why the lovers are apart, whether the beloved can hear the plea, or whether the speaker will truly return. The rivers may express the speaker’s own hope rather than promise a happy ending.
