Dream Of You

The speaker describes waiting for someone they hoped would arrive and make life feel complete. At first, the waiting seems patient and purposeful, but it has led to loneliness. The speaker then questions whether this solitary life matches what they wanted or imagined. The repeated questions give the song a reflective, sorrowful mood rather than a sense of resolution.

Laying a hand on the heart, and later on the soul, suggests a private, serious act of self-examination: the speaker is trying to face their feelings honestly. “Come through my door” can mean a literal arrival, but it may also represent the hoped-for beginning of closeness. The “emptiness” points to an inner lack that the speaker expects another person or a new experience to fill.

The “dream” may be a fantasy of a particular person, a hoped-for relationship, or simply a better life. The lyrics do not explain why the other person is absent, or whether they ever shared the speaker’s hopes. So the song can be heard both as longing for someone and as disappointment in expectations that have kept the speaker waiting.
