Lyrics meaning
The song portrays a laborer trapped in a cycle of hard work, poverty, and debt. Each day he hauls coal, but his reward is not freedom or security: he grows older while owing more. The repeated refrain gives the song a weary, bitter force, while the singerโs tough, defiant voice suggests he refuses to appear helpless.
โSixteen tonsโ stands for an exhausting amount of work, and โanother day older and deeper in debtโ captures how labor fails to improve the workerโs situation. The โcompany storeโ implies that the employer also controls where workers buy necessities, so wages can return as debt. When the singer says he owes his soul, he uses a strong expression for feeling bound to the company, not necessarily a literal sale of his soul.
The references to Saint Peter, who is traditionally imagined as welcoming the dead, add a darkly comic note: the singer says he cannot die or leave because he still owes money. His boasts about iron fists, fighting, and being raised by a lion may be literal exaggeration or a performed image of toughness. They can be heard as resistance, but they do not erase the central sense of being trapped.
