Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream

The song presents a dream of a world where everyone agrees to end war. At first, the focus is on leaders making a promise; then the scene opens to ordinary people celebrating. The feeling is hopeful and peaceful, though the repeated return to the dream reminds us that this is imagined, not described as a real change.

The “mighty room” suggests a place where powerful decisions are made. The signed papers represent a formal promise, while “a million copies” hints that the agreement is meant to reach everyone. Below, people dance as weapons and uniforms lie on the ground. This image suggests that war’s tools and symbols have lost their purpose.

The song can be heard as a simple wish for peace, but it also draws attention to the gap between wanting peace and achieving it. The leaders’ agreement seems complete, and the prayers and dancing show shared relief. Yet the speaker only dreamed it. That ending leaves some uncertainty: perhaps the dream offers hope, or perhaps its distance from reality makes the wish feel especially poignant.
