Lyrics meaning

The speaker describes returning to a relationship hoping the other person will be there, but finding distance instead. The mood shifts from loneliness and a wish to save their love toward anger and exhaustion: the speaker says they have given everything and cannot continue as before. Yet the repeated mention of a โ€œchance to hold onโ€ suggests the feelings are not entirely settled.

โ€œComing homeโ€ can mean returning to a place, but here it may also mean seeking comfort and closeness with a partner. Feeling โ€œcold in the airโ€ reflects more than the weather: it suggests emotional loneliness while the loved one is absent. Calling the partner โ€œanother faceโ€ implies that someone once familiar is becoming a stranger. โ€œWhat have I got to show?โ€ is a way of asking what the speaker received in return for all their effort.

The lyrics hold a tension between rejection and attachment. The speaker says the other person must leave, but also returns to the possibility of preserving the relationship. The later question, โ€œif Iโ€™m right or if Iโ€™m wrong, does it matter anyway?โ€, may express resignation, or the sense that blame no longer helps. The long time since physical closeness could refer to this relationship or to love more generally; the lyrics do not make that fully clear.
