The lyrics describe a moment of political violence and its emotional shock. The repeated announcement that four people are dead makes the loss feel immediate and impossible to ignore. The speaker moves from noticing signs of conflict to asking listeners to face what has happened rather than turn away.

“Tin soldiers” suggests armed forces, while “Nixon’s comin’” links their arrival with political power; the phrase does not explain exactly what will happen, but creates a sense of threat. “Hear the drummin’” can suggest the approach of soldiers or the growing tension of a confrontation. The question “What if you knew her?” makes the victims feel personal: instead of distant statistics, they become people someone might love.

The repeated “How can you run when you know?” may be a challenge to people who witness injustice: once they know, can they simply leave or remain uninvolved? The song does not specify what action each listener should take, so the line can be heard as a moral question rather than a direct instruction. Its chants and repeated count may express grief, anger, protest, or all three at once.
