Lyrics meaning

The lyrics describe someone struggling after a relationship has ended. The speaker says they tried hard to make the other person happy, but were left anyway. They feel hurt and angry, yet still want the person back. As the song continues, this longing becomes a sense of helpless waiting: the speaker knows they cannot make the other person stay, but cannot easily stop hoping.

โ€œAddictedโ€ is a metaphor for feeling unable to let go of someone, not necessarily a claim about literal substance use. โ€œIโ€™d run a thousand milesโ€ suggests extreme willingness to reunite, while โ€œheartbreakerโ€ labels the person as someone who caused deep pain. The repeated phrase โ€œI tried to make you happyโ€ presents the speakerโ€™s effort as important, but it does not tell us whether the relationshipโ€™s problems were only the other personโ€™s fault.

The speakerโ€™s feelings are contradictory: they call the relationship over and say they never want to repeat the experience, but they also insist they still need and want the person. This may show how grief can keep someone attached even when they recognize that the relationship has ended. The lyrics give only one personโ€™s perspective, so we cannot know what the other person felt or why they left.
