Rasputin

The lyrics present a mysterious, powerful man who attracts very different reactions. Many people fear him, while some women find him charming. His religious passion and his romantic appeal are shown side by side, making him seem both influential and scandalous. The repeated chorus turns this portrait into a lively, almost playful tale, though the final words suggest disapproval.

“Flaming glow” is an image for an intense, striking look, not necessarily a literal light in his eyes. Calling him a “love machine” is a humorous exaggeration that portrays him as highly successful with women. “A cat that really was gone” is informal slang: here, “gone” suggests someone wild, unusual, or out of control, adding to the song’s comic, larger-than-life picture.

The lyrics mix admiration, gossip, and criticism rather than offering a balanced account. The phrase “lover of the Russian Queen” sounds dramatic, but the song does not explain exactly what that relationship means. Likewise, “it was a shame how he carried on” signals that his behavior was considered improper, without specifying every reason. The repeated lines make the story feel like a catchy legend, so the portrait may be understood as playful storytelling rather than a precise judgment.
