Lyrics meaning
The song follows a worker who dreams of escaping his hard, repetitive job and building a life with a young woman. Their relationship seems hopeful at first, but her family intervenes, and he ends up in prison, doing road work under supervision. The repeated chorus makes the labor feel endless, while the story moves from hope to confinement and disappointment.
The highway is both a literal workplace and a sign of the life the narrator feels trapped in: he spends his days building a road, yet cannot seem to move toward a better future. His โpictureโ of the woman is an image he carries in his mind, giving him comfort and a reason to hope. The phrase โput me straight awayโ means the judge sent him directly to prison; the ending reveals that his road work is now part of a prison work gang.
The narrator presents himself as a victim of unfair circumstances, but the lyrics leave important details unclear. We do not learn exactly what happened when the womanโs brothers took him, or whether his account gives the whole story. The song can be heard as a tale of youthful love crushed by family power and punishment, but also as a portrait of someone whose dream of escape may have been fragile from the beginning.
