Lyrics meaning
The lyrics first sketch two people preparing for an evening out, each with romantic hopes. Juliet tidies herself and wonders whether she might be late for the cinema; Romeo dresses up and imagines winning her over. Their confidence is playful, but the repeated question about whether they can succeed leaves the outcome uncertain. The mood then shifts from comic anticipation to a reflective speech about experience and identity.
The โweekend millionaireโ suggests Romeo is dressing and behaving as if he were richer or more important than he is. His โchocolate surpriseโ sounds like a modest, perhaps awkward romantic offering, contrasting with his grand confidence. Tiresias, called an โold oneโ who has lived through much, introduces a wider perspective: the speaker describes having experienced life as both man and woman, comparing one to the sea and the other to the earth.
That final comparison is deliberately suggestive rather than fully explained. The sea may evoke restless force, while the earth may suggest giving, steadiness, or fertility; the claim that there is โmore earth than seaโ could express a personal balance between those qualities. The lyrics do not tell us whether Romeo and Julietโs date succeeds, or exactly what Tiresias means by the contrast. This leaves the everyday courtship scene alongside a broader, open-ended reflection.
