Maria

The lyrics describe a speaker captivated by Maria, a woman who seems confident, distant, and unaware of the attention she attracts. The feelings move between admiration and distress: her appearance and manner inspire desire, but her indifference leaves the admirer feeling overwhelmed. The song presents attraction as powerful, even painful, rather than calm or mutual.

Several images make this intensity vivid. A heart beating “like a subway train” suggests fast, unstoppable excitement. “Blue as ice and desire” combines coldness with longing, implying that Maria may seem emotionally distant while still stirring strong feelings. “Walkin’ on imported air” is an exaggerated image of luxury and superiority: she appears so polished that even the air around her seems expensive. The repeated wish to “take her home” expresses a desire to possess or keep her, not simply to admire her.

The song’s language is dramatic and may be intentionally contradictory. Maria is described as both cool and desirable, while the admirer’s urge to “break her” sounds troubling and possessive. That phrase may be an extreme expression of frustration, but it also reveals how attraction can become confused with control. “Regina, Ave Maria” adds a grand, almost devotional tone; it could suggest that the admirer places Maria on a pedestal, without proving that she is truly known or understood.
