Lyrics meaning
The lyrics present a bleak view of a world shaped by fear, violence, and hatred. The speakers describe people defeating enemies, building confidence on destruction, and passing hostility on to their children. The repeated cry that life burns gives the song an urgent, intense feeling. At the same time, the refrain about praying that things would last suggests a wish to hold on to life or love, even when the speakers seem to believe that both are under threat.
Several images make these ideas vivid. A person dying โlike a butterflyโ may suggest how fragile and brief human life is. The โtouch of the reaperโ refers to death, imagined as a figure that comes to claim the living. Walls coming down can mean the collapse of defenses or the breakdown of a society. The contrast between giving life to children and teaching them to hate suggests that people pass their damage and beliefs to the next generation.
The songโs statements are deliberately extreme, so they need not be read as a literal description of every person or every part of the world. โOne love is a crooked lieโ may express disappointment in love, or distrust of claims that love alone can solve deep problems. The repeated image of evil controlling the world could be despair, anger, or an accusation against human choices. The lyrics leave open whether any hope remains, but the wish that things would last hints at a longing for something worth saving.
