The speaker looks back on a relationship that was loving at first but became painful and unreliable. Saying she knows the reason for the goodbye “like the back of my hand” means she knows it very well, even when longing makes the decision feel harder. The “loaded gun” compares her love to something dangerous, suggesting that he treated her affection as a threat or pushed it away.

The repeated wish that he were “a better man” does not necessarily mean she wants him back exactly as he was. It may express grief for the person she hoped he could become, and for the future they might have shared.
