Purify

The lyrics portray a desire to erase the past and become completely clean or new. The repeated plea to “purify” sounds both determined and desperate: the speaker wants help, but the repeated questions suggest that change may not be easy or fully within their control. The mood shifts between forceful rejection of the past and a need for someone else to share the effort.

Several images make this desire vivid. “Old paint” suggests an outdated surface or identity that can be stripped away, while “turpentine” is a strong cleaner used to remove paint; here, it may represent a painful but powerful way to wipe things clean. “Bones” and “skeleton” evoke what remains when everything is stripped away, and can also suggest hidden past events or parts of oneself one would rather not face. The wish to be “ultra clean” or a “skeleton” sounds extreme, as if ordinary change is not enough.

The lyrics leave open whether purification means personal renewal, escape from guilt, or an attempt to deny uncomfortable memories. “I can find the dirt on anything” hints that the speaker may see flaws everywhere, making perfect cleanliness impossible. The final refusal to dance with “what might have been” suggests a wish to stop being drawn into the past, though it does not prove that the speaker has truly moved beyond it.
