Given To Fly

The lyrics follow a person who begins isolated and overwhelmed, then escapes and experiences a powerful sense of freedom by the sea. At first, he seems to shut himself off from what is happening around him. After a painful period, he runs far away and rises into a feeling of possibility. When he returns, he wants to help others, but people hurt him. Even so, he remains generous and loving.

Several images suggest this change. Being “locked out” and seeing “chains” can represent loneliness or the limits that trap people. The ocean and wind lead to the image of wings: he is not necessarily flying in a literal sense, but may feel lifted beyond ordinary suffering. The “key to the locks” suggests that he believes he can share a way toward freedom with others.

The ending holds both hope and sadness. His kindness survives, but the violence he faces shows that helping others can bring pain. “The love he receives is the love that is saved” may mean that love given and returned can endure, though the wording is open to interpretation. The person “seen” in the sky might be a symbol of rare freedom—or simply how distant and extraordinary his experience appears to those below.
